Wildlife Week 10th June 2024
Published 06:48 on 5 Jun 2024
This year's Wildlife Week focusses on birds we might see in the Harbour. And introduces a new competition to see as many different birds in the Autumn.
The environmental board in the clubhouse has been updated with birds you may spot while sailing on the water and those you might see wading in mud feeding at low water. There are also some tips to help identify what you may have seen, including a brilliant free app which recognises their calls - Merlin.
Dell Quay Migration Watch is a new competition running during September and October to record as many different birds that you see. Many stop off on our coast before migrating south so it's an ideal time to see more of the more unusual species. All you need is a pair of binoculars - there's plenty of time to rummage through attics or find some on Facebook Marketplace (from only £10). Then in the Autumn just register what you've seen on the dedicated website - dellquaymigrationwatch.weebly.com. No prizes as it's just for fun, but the winner will be announced in December's Quay News. And families can enter as a team so you can count birds that anyone has seen.
We'll also be running a bird awareness session one day at Junior Week. There'll be stalls on using a monocular and making bird kebabs and the bird beak challenge amongst others.
