Training » Power Boat Level 2 Course

14th - 15 October 2023

Dell Quay offers subsidised power boat and safety boat training to club members so that they can develop their skills and become Patrol Boat helms in support of club sailing activities. The courses run over a weekend, and it is important that students attend both days. The cost for each course in late 2023 / early 2024 is only £60.

The first step to becoming a Patrol Boat helm is the RYA Power Boat Level 2 course. On completion of this course, and to provide some experience, we ask that members volunteer for at least 4 patrol boat crew duties, which will provide them with experience of being on the water during sailing activities and should also allow them to gain some additional helm experience. The final qualification is the RYA Safety Boat course, after which you will hold the necessary qualification to become a Patrol Boat helm at Dell Quay.

The Power Boat Level 2 course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat. The course covers:

  • launching and recovery
  • boat handling
  • securing to a buoy
  • anchoring
  • leaving and coming alongside
  • man overboard recovery
  • slow speed close-quarters manoeuvring
  • an introduction to driving at planing speed
  • collision regulations

The Power Boat Level 2 certificate allows holders to apply for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC), an especially useful certificate if you plan to go boating abroad.

The start powerboating handbook is included in the course price as is the certificate, however this is not guaranteed unless the course is successfully completed.

Pre-course requirements: No prior experience is required, minimum age of 18 unless on the DQSC Dinghy Instructor pathway.
